XCOM 2 guide · Updated

Your XCOM 2 mod list on another PC.

Moving a long XCOM 2 mod list to a new PC, or giving a friend the same campaign setup? SyncCrate copies the local mods for the base game and War of the Chosen, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why XCOM 2 mod lists are hard to rebuild

Modded XCOM 2 lists often run to a hundred mods or more: new classes, enemies, weapons, voice packs and the compatibility mods that hold them together. Workshop subscriptions can be repeated on a new PC, but mods installed by hand, older versions you kept on purpose and your own config edits have to be copied.

War of the Chosen makes it a little more confusing, because it has its own Mods folder next to the base game's, and mods made for one usually don't work in the other.

SyncCrate syncs both local mods folders, separately. Files are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and you see the list before anything changes.

Built in for XCOM 2

  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while XCOM 2 is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync XCOM 2 in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add XCOM 2 in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose XCOM 2 and its launcher (or the Alternative Mod Launcher) on the PC that's receiving files before you sync.

// 04 Common problems

When XCOM 2 mods don't match

  • Base game and War of the Chosen mods mixed up

    Mods built for the base game usually don't work with War of the Chosen and the other way around, and putting one in the wrong folder is an easy mistake.

    The two folders sync separately, so each mod lands where it was on the host.

  • Mods from outside the Workshop

    Mods from other sites, or ones you kept at an older version on purpose, don't come back when you subscribe on a new PC.

    Everything in the host's local Mods folders syncs, wherever it came from.

  • Mods copied but switched off

    Which mods are active is saved by the launcher in your Documents folder, not in the Mods folders.

    SyncCrate copies the mods. Tick them in the launcher, or the Alternative Mod Launcher, on the other PC once.

  • Hundreds of mods, hours of copying

    Big mod lists with voice and cosmetic packs add up to many gigabytes.

    Files are compared by hash and only the differences are copied, at local network speed when both PCs are at home.

Good to know

  • Steam Workshop mods are kept by Steam in its own folder, outside the game's folder, so SyncCrate can't sync them. The Content page says how many you have. Subscribe to the same items on the other PC.
  • Saves and settings stay yours. They live in Documents, and only the two local Mods folders sync.
  • Mods run code. Only sync with people you trust, and check the plan before you approve it.

// FAQ

XCOM 2 questions

Where are XCOM 2 local mods installed?

Base game mods go in XComGame/Mods inside the game folder, War of the Chosen mods in XCom2-WarOfTheChosen/XComGame/Mods. Workshop mods are kept in Steam's workshop folder instead.

Does it sync Workshop mods?

No. Steam keeps them outside the game folder. Subscribe to the same Workshop items on the other PC, and SyncCrate copies the local ones.

Does it work with the Alternative Mod Launcher?

Yes. AML reads the same mod folders. SyncCrate copies the files, and you pick the active mods in AML on the other PC.

Can I share my XCOM 2 campaign save?

Not with SyncCrate: saves live in your Documents folder, which isn't one of the synced folders. Only mods sync.
