Torchlight II guide · Updated

Same Torchlight II mods for the whole party.

Modded Torchlight II co-op works best when everyone runs the same mods. SyncCrate copies the host's .mod files and, if you want, your saves between PCs, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why modded Torchlight II co-op is picky

Torchlight II has one of the best-loved mod scenes of its era, with class packs, overhauls and item mods built in the GUTS editor. In multiplayer, players need the same mods to play together, and the order they're loaded in can matter too.

Characters care about mods as well. A hero played with a set of mods expects them the next time, and loading the save without them can lose the items and skills those mods added.

With SyncCrate the host's mods folder is the one that counts. Friends sync from it, only the differences are copied, and everyone sees the list before anything changes.

Built in for Torchlight II

  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Torchlight II is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Torchlight II in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Torchlight II in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose Torchlight II before syncing. SyncCrate warns you if the game is still running. After a sync, check the mod list and order in the game's Mods menu.

// 04 Common problems

When Torchlight II mods don't match

  • Mod mismatch in multiplayer

    Players with different mods, or different versions of them, can't play together or see different items and classes.

    Everyone syncs the host's mods folder, so every player has the same .mod files.

  • Moving characters to another PC

    Your heroes live in a save folder in Documents, easy to overlook when you reinstall or change PCs.

    Sync the save folder from the old PC. Sync the mods too, so characters made with mods find them.

  • A mod updated for one player only

    When one friend grabs a newer version of a mod, the group no longer matches.

    The host updates the mod once. Everyone else syncs and gets only the changed files.

Good to know

  • Steam Workshop mods are kept by Steam in its own folder, so SyncCrate can't sync them. Friends subscribe to the same items; SyncCrate syncs the .mod files in mods.
  • Load order isn't synced. Each player picks the mods and their order in the game's Mods menu. Use the same order as the host.
  • Saves are personal. Sync them between your own PCs. When the same save changed on both, you choose which one to keep.

Torchlight II questions

Where do Torchlight II mods go?

Mods you install by hand go in Documents/My Games/Runic Games/Torchlight 2/mods on Windows. SyncCrate finds the folder by itself, on a Mac as well.

Do all players need the same mods in Torchlight II multiplayer?

Yes, for gameplay mods. Syncing the host's mods folder and using the same order in the Mods menu is the reliable way.

Can I move my Torchlight II characters to a new PC?

Yes. Host on the old PC, join from the new one and sync the save folder. If the characters were played with mods, sync the mods folder as well.

Does it sync Steam Workshop mods?

No. Workshop mods are managed by Steam. Everyone subscribes to the same ones, and SyncCrate syncs mods in the local mods folder.
