// 01 Why

Why moving a modded Morrowind takes a whole evening

Morrowind has been modded for over twenty years, and a modern setup is a pile of plugins, mesh fixes, texture replacers and patches collected from many sites. Some of those files are hard to find again, which makes a fresh install on a second PC more painful than it should be.

Copying the folder by hand works, but it's easy to overwrite the game's own files or miss the one patch that made everything work together.

SyncCrate copies only the mods in the host's Data Files folder, compares every file by content, and after the first sync sends only new and changed files. You see the list before anything changes.

// 03 How it works

Sync The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipEach PC needs its own copy of Morrowind with Tribunal and Bloodmoon if the mods need them. Tools that patch the exe, like the Morrowind Code Patch, and MWSE are set up on each PC.

// 04 Common problems

When The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind mods don't match

  • Plugins are copied but switched off

    In the original engine, which plugins are active is written in Morrowind.ini next to the game's exe, and the order comes from the plugins' file dates. Neither is in Data Files.

    SyncCrate copies the files, which get new dates on the other PC. Enable and sort the plugins there once in the launcher's Data Files list, your mod manager or a sorting tool.

  • Game files overwritten

    Copying a Data Files folder from another PC also copies Morrowind.esm, Tribunal and Bloodmoon, and can replace your own copies with differently patched ones.

    Morrowind's own .esm and .bsa files are never synced. Only mods are.

  • Exe patches don't travel

    The Morrowind Code Patch and similar tools change the game's exe, and MWSE installs next to it. None of that is in Data Files.

    Apply the same patches on each PC once. After that, SyncCrate keeps the mods in Data Files the same.

  • Texture packs every time

    High-resolution texture and mesh replacers are big, and copying the whole folder again for one new plugin wastes time.

    Files are compared by hash and only the differences are copied, at local network speed when both PCs are at home.

Good to know

  • OpenMW: SyncCrate syncs the game's Data Files folder, and .omwaddon files in it. If your OpenMW setup keeps each mod in its own data folder listed in openmw.cfg, those folders aren't synced, and neither is openmw.cfg itself.
  • Only the file types listed above sync. MWSE's Lua scripts and anything outside Data Files aren't copied.
  • Mod Organizer 2 keeps mods outside Data Files, so an MO2 setup has nothing there to copy. Manual installs work.
  • Saves aren't synced. Only mods are, so each player keeps their own characters.

// FAQ

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind questions

Can I copy my Morrowind mods to another PC?

Yes. Install SyncCrate on both PCs, host on the one with your mods, join from the other and Compare & Sync. Then turn the new plugins on in the launcher or your mod manager.

Does it copy Tribunal and Bloodmoon?

No. The base game and both expansions are skipped. Every PC needs its own copy, which the GOG and Steam versions include.

Does it work with OpenMW?

For mods in the original Data Files folder, yes. Mods in separate data folders configured in openmw.cfg aren't synced.

Does it sync my load order?

No. Active plugins are listed in Morrowind.ini (or openmw.cfg for OpenMW), outside Data Files. Enable and sort them once on the other PC.
