V Rising guide · Updated

Same V Rising mods for the whole clan.

Modded V Rising needs matching plugins on the server and on every player that needs them. SyncCrate copies the host's BepInEx plugins, and the configs if you want, to every friend, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why modded V Rising is hard to keep in step

V Rising mods run on BepInEx. Many of them only need to be on the server, but some also need a matching copy on every player's PC, and a clan where one player has an older version of such a mod gets errors, missing features or can't connect at all.

Game updates make it worse: BepInEx and most plugins need new versions after a patch, and for a while every clan member is on a different mix of old and new files.

With SyncCrate one PC hosts and the others match it. Plugins are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and everyone sees the list before anything changes.

Built in for V Rising

  • Script warnings. .dll files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • BepInEx check. Warns when BepInEx isn't installed on a PC, because the synced mods can't load without it.
  • Disabling that sticks. Turning a mod off renames it to .disabled in place, because the game also loads mods from subfolders.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while V Rising is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync V Rising in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add V Rising in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipEvery PC that runs mods needs BepInEx itself installed once. SyncCrate syncs the plugins and configs and warns you if BepInEx is missing.

// 04 Common problems

When V Rising mods don't match

  • Plugin versions don't match

    A mod that needs to be on both sides fails when the client and server run different versions.

    Everyone syncs the host's plugins before joining, so versions match file for file.

  • Everything broke after a patch

    Game updates stop BepInEx plugins until they're updated, and old files left on one PC keep causing trouble.

    Check for updates asks Thunderstore about mods installed from it. The host updates, everyone else syncs and gets only the changed files.

  • BepInEx missing on a new PC

    Plugins copied into a game without BepInEx do nothing, and the game starts unmodded without saying why.

    The mod health check warns when BepInEx isn't installed and links to its download.

  • Finding the mod that breaks it

    With a long plugin list, one outdated mod can stop the game from starting after an update.

    Find a broken mod turns half of your plugins off, you test, and it narrows it down until one is left.

Good to know

  • Modded servers only. Play with mods on your own or community servers that allow them, not on official servers.
  • Dedicated server? The server needs the server-side plugins. If it runs on a PC with SyncCrate and a desktop, point SyncCrate at the server's folder and sync it like any other PC.
  • Using r2modman or Thunderstore Mod Manager? Your mods live in the manager's profile folder. Use Settings → Browse profile folder in the manager and point SyncCrate at that folder.
  • Plugins run code. .dll files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.

// FAQ

V Rising questions

Do all players need the same mods in V Rising?

For mods that run on both server and client, yes. Server-only mods only need to be on the server. Syncing the host's set means nobody has to work out which is which.

Where are V Rising mods installed?

With BepInEx, plugins go in BepInEx/plugins inside the game folder, and settings in BepInEx/config. Mod managers use a profile folder with the same layout instead.

Can I use mods on official servers?

Official servers run the unmodded game. Keep mods to servers set up for them. SyncCrate doesn't change anything about how you connect to a server.

Does it work with a dedicated server?

If the server runs on a PC with a desktop, yes: install SyncCrate there, point it at the server's folder and sync it. SyncCrate has no command-line version for headless servers yet.
