Terraria guide · Updated

Share Terraria worlds so anyone can host.

The world lives on whoever hosted last. SyncCrate copies worlds, characters and resource packs between PCs, for both Terraria and tModLoader, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why sharing a Terraria world is harder than it should be

In Terraria multiplayer, the world file stays on the host's PC. When that friend isn't around, nobody else can host, and the group either waits or starts over. Handing the world over means finding the files, zipping them and sending them in Discord, every time.

tModLoader keeps its own worlds and characters next to the vanilla ones, which makes it easy to send the wrong copy.

SyncCrate syncs the world, character and resource pack folders for both, directly between PCs. Files are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and you see the list before anything changes.

Built in for Terraria

  • Script warnings. .dll files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Terraria is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Terraria in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Terraria in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose Terraria on the PC receiving the world before you sync. SyncCrate warns you if it's still running.

// 04 Common problems

When Terraria mods don't match

  • The host isn't online

    The world file is on one PC. Without it, nobody else can host the group's world.

    Sync the world to whoever hosts next. They get the latest copy and can host it.

  • Moving to a new PC

    Characters and worlds from years of play live in your Documents folder, not with the game.

    Sync them from the old PC to the new one, vanilla and tModLoader alike.

  • Mixing up vanilla and tModLoader

    tModLoader has its own Worlds and Players folders, with extra .twld and .tplr files for mod data. Copy only the .wld and the mod items are gone.

    SyncCrate treats them as separate folders and always copies the mod data files with their world or character.

  • Both of you played the same world

    If two people played their own copy of the world, merging isn't possible: one version has to win.

    When the same world changed on both PCs, SyncCrate asks which one to keep, or keeps both.

Good to know

  • Steam Workshop mods for tModLoader are stored by Steam and aren't synced. tModLoader can download a server's mods when you join, and everyone can subscribe to the same Workshop mods.
  • Cloud saves: characters and worlds marked as cloud saves in the game are stored by Steam, not in the Terraria folder. Turn cloud off for the ones you want to sync.
  • Your settings stay yours. Only worlds, characters, mods and resource packs sync.
  • Taking turns on one world? Share it with your crew under Shared saves on the Dashboard. It then only moves when someone takes it or gives it back, never in a normal sync, so nobody plays an old copy. Friends connect from Crews or with the join code, not over the local network.

// FAQ

Terraria questions

How do I give my Terraria world to a friend?

Install SyncCrate on both PCs. Host on yours, your friend joins and runs Compare & Sync, and the world files arrive in their Worlds folder. Then they can host it.

Where are Terraria worlds saved?

On Windows in Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds (tModLoader: Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\Worlds), on a Mac in ~/Library/Application Support/Terraria, and on Linux in ~/.local/share/Terraria.

Does it sync tModLoader mods?

It syncs mods in tModLoader's Mods folder, and which mods are enabled. Mods from the Steam Workshop are stored by Steam; tModLoader can download them from the server when you join.

Can I move my character to another PC?

Yes. Characters sync like worlds, for vanilla and tModLoader. Cloud-saved characters need cloud turned off first.
