Vintage Story guide · Updated

Same Vintage Story mods on every PC.

A modded Vintage Story world only works when everyone has the same mods. SyncCrate copies the host's Mods folder, mod configs and worlds to every friend, and after the first time only what changed.

// 01 Why

Why modded Vintage Story gets out of step

Vintage Story is built to be modded, and most groups end up with a long list: new crops, better tools, map and HUD mods, and the libraries half of them need. A server expects players to have the mods it runs, and a friend with a missing or older mod can't get in or sees blocks that don't belong anywhere.

Worlds bring their own problem. A world is a single .vcdbs file, but it only loads cleanly with the mods it was played with, so handing it to the next host means handing over the mods too.

SyncCrate keeps one PC as the host and makes the others match it. Mods, configs and worlds are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and everyone sees the list before anything changes.

Built in for Vintage Story

  • Script warnings. .dll and .cs files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Vintage Story is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Vintage Story in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Vintage Story in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose Vintage Story on the receiving PC before syncing. SyncCrate warns you if the game is still running.

// 04 Common problems

When Vintage Story mods don't match

  • A friend can't join the server

    When a player is missing a mod the server needs, or has a different version, joining fails or the world looks broken.

    Everyone syncs the host's Mods folder before joining, so the mod list matches file for file.

  • Configs that should match

    Some mods have settings that must be the same for everyone, like spawn rates or recipe changes, while others are personal.

    ModConfig is its own folder. The host chooses whether friends may sync it, and conflicts ask whose version to keep.

  • Passing the world on

    When the usual host can't play, the world is stuck on their PC.

    Sync the world and the mods to whoever hosts next. The world arrives in Saves on their PC.

  • Code mods from a friend

    Many Vintage Story mods include compiled code or .cs source that the game runs.

    .dll and .cs files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.

Good to know

  • Same game version. Mods are made for a game version, so everyone should run the same one. SyncCrate doesn't update the game itself.
  • Dedicated server? A server needs the mods too. If it runs on a PC with SyncCrate and a desktop, point SyncCrate at the server's data folder and sync it like any other PC.
  • Your client settings stay yours. Only Mods, ModConfig and Saves sync.

Vintage Story questions

Where are Vintage Story mods stored?

In the VintagestoryData folder: %APPDATA%\VintagestoryData\Mods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/VintagestoryData/Mods on a Mac and ~/.config/VintagestoryData/Mods on Linux. SyncCrate finds it automatically.

How do I give a friend my Vintage Story world?

Host on your PC, have them join and Compare & Sync the Saves and Mods folders. The world shows up in their world list, with the mods it needs.

Do all players need the same mods?

For content mods, yes: the server and every player need them. Purely client-side mods can differ, but syncing the host's set avoids guessing.

Can a Windows PC and a Linux PC share mods?

Yes. SyncCrate runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and the VintagestoryData folder has the same layout on all three.
