Fallout: New Vegas guide · Updated

Your New Vegas mod list on another PC.

Moving to a new PC or giving a friend your modded Mojave? SyncCrate copies the mods in your Data folder, and after the first time only the files that changed. The game's own files and DLC stay where they are.

// 01 Why

Why a modded New Vegas is hard to copy

A stable New Vegas mod list takes work: xNVSE and its plugins, bug fixes, texture and mesh replacers, patches for every combination of mods. Most people build it by following a guide step by step, and nobody wants to repeat that on a second PC.

A friend who wants the same setup is in the same spot. Missing one patch or getting a different version of a plugin is enough for crashes that are hard to track down.

SyncCrate copies the mods in the host's Data folder to the other PC, compares every file by content, and after the first sync sends only new and changed files. You see the list before anything changes.

Built in for Fallout: New Vegas

  • Script warnings. .dll files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Fallout: New Vegas is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Fallout: New Vegas in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Fallout: New Vegas in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipEach PC needs its own copy of the game and DLC, xNVSE installed once, and the same tools that patch the game's exe (like the 4GB patch). SyncCrate copies the mods in Data, not the game.

// 04 Common problems

When Fallout: New Vegas mods don't match

  • Mod Organizer 2 setups

    Many New Vegas guides use Mod Organizer 2. MO2 keeps every mod in its own folder and only shows them to the game while it runs, so the real Data folder stays almost empty.

    SyncCrate copies what's actually in Data, so it works for Vortex and manual installs. For an MO2 setup there is nothing in Data to copy.

  • Load order doesn't come along

    Which plugins are active is saved in plugins.txt in your AppData folder, and New Vegas orders plugins by their file dates. Neither is part of the Data folder.

    SyncCrate copies the files, which get new dates on the other PC. Enable and sort the plugins there once with your mod manager or LOOT after a sync that brings new ones.

  • xNVSE plugins that don't load

    Plugins like the popular NVSE extensions are .dll files that need xNVSE itself, and xNVSE sits next to the game's exe, outside Data.

    The plugins sync with the rest of the mods and are flagged before they do, so you see what runs code. Install xNVSE on each PC once.

  • DLC that shouldn't be copied

    Data also holds the base game and the DLC (Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road and the smaller packs). Copying those to someone who doesn't own them isn't OK.

    New Vegas's own .esm and .bsa files and all DLC are never synced. Only mods are.

// 05 Fallout: New Vegas

Good to know

  • Only mods sync. FalloutNV.esm, the official archives and all DLC files are skipped. Every PC needs its own copy of any DLC the mods require.
  • Exe patches aren't in Data. The 4GB patch and xNVSE's loader live next to the game's exe and aren't copied. Set them up on each PC.
  • Your settings stay yours. FalloutPrefs.ini, Fallout.ini and saves live in Documents and aren't synced.
  • Plugins run code. .dll files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.

// FAQ

Fallout: New Vegas questions

Can I copy my New Vegas mods to another PC?

Yes, if they're installed into Data (Vortex or manual installs). Install SyncCrate on both PCs, host on the one with your mods, join from the other and Compare & Sync. Then enable and sort the new plugins on the other PC.

Does it work with Mod Organizer 2?

No. MO2 keeps mods outside the Data folder and adds them to the game only while it runs, so SyncCrate has nothing to copy. Vortex and manual installs work.

Does it copy the DLC?

No. The base game's files and every DLC are skipped. Each PC needs its own copy of the DLC your mods need.

Steam or GOG?

Both are found automatically. Keep every PC on the same edition, since some exe patches and plugins are made for one version of the game's exe.
