// 01 Why

Why your Don't Starve mods don't follow you

Don't Starve is a single-player game, but mod setups still get passed around: a friend wants the same map tweaks and characters, or you want your setup on a laptop. Workshop subscriptions come back on their own, but mods you downloaded elsewhere, edited yourself or kept at an older version don't.

Each of those is a folder of Lua scripts and art in the game's mods folder, and copying them by hand means finding the game folder on each PC and keeping track of which ones changed.

SyncCrate syncs the host's mods folder to the other PC. Files are compared by content, only the differences are copied, and you see the list before anything changes.

Built in for Don't Starve

  • Script warnings. .lua files run code on your PC, so they're flagged for you to review before they sync.
  • Turn mods on and off. Disabled mods move to a _Disabled folder the game doesn't load.
  • Game-running warning. SyncCrate warns you before syncing while Don't Starve is still open.
  • Undo and history. Undo the last sync in one click, and put back any single file a sync replaced or deleted.

// 03 How it works

Sync Don't Starve in three steps

  1. Install and add the game

    Install SyncCrate on every PC and add Don't Starve in the Game Browser. Its folder is found automatically.

  2. One PC hosts

    The PC with the setup everyone should have clicks Start Hosting. The others pick it under Scan for Hosts on the same network, or paste its join code from anywhere.

  3. Compare and sync

    Check the list of new, changed and conflicting files, then Sync Now. Only the files that differ are copied, PC to PC.

TipClose Don't Starve on the PC that's receiving files before you sync. After syncing, turn the new mods on in the game's Mods menu.

// 04 Common problems

When Don't Starve mods don't match

  • Mods from outside the Workshop

    Mods from forums, GitHub or your own edits don't come back when you subscribe on a new PC, because they were never on the Workshop.

    Everything in the host's mods folder syncs, wherever it came from.

  • A mod you changed yourself

    Tweaking a mod's settings in its Lua files is common, and those edits are lost as soon as you reinstall the mod on another PC.

    SyncCrate copies the host's files as they are, edits included, and only the changed files next time.

  • Mods that need a DLC

    Some mods are made for Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked or Hamlet, and don't work, or break the world, without it.

    SyncCrate copies mods, not DLC. Check that the other PC has the same DLC before you enable a mod made for one.

Good to know

  • Steam Workshop mods that Steam keeps in its own folder aren't synced. Subscribe to them on the other PC, and SyncCrate syncs the rest.
  • Mods run code. .lua files are flagged before they sync, and nothing changes until you approve the list. Only sync with people you trust.
  • Saves aren't synced. Only the mods folder is.
  • Don't Starve Together is a separate game in SyncCrate.
